Woodcut Illustrations
Most books in the 17th century featured woodcut or engraved illustrations. Both are marked by a crisp, black-and-white style. Sometimes illustrations were colored by hand painting, which was an expensive process.
Illustrations are different from decorations in that they tell a story in picture form. They depict a specific event, entity, or principle.
Below are samples of 17th-century style illustrations.
